Donald Trump has nominated a loyalist to head the FBI, which the president-elect has long criticized as corrupt, with him now appointing Kash Patel as its director.

When the CIA began looking into whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to rig the 2016 presidential election, Kash Patel gained notoriety for his fury. Patel would succeed Christopher Wray, whom Trump appointed during his first term as president, if confirmed.

Trump called Kash Patel “a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter” who played a “pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax.”

Rather than working in senior law enforcement or administrative positions, Patel has devoted a large portion of his career to the legal trenches. Former coworkers characterize him as a mediocre performance who harbours a deep-seated resentment toward the Justice Department.

Michael Caruso, his then-supervisor, said that Patel avoided cases where he was certain to lose because he was hesitant to take on difficult motions.

Since 2022, Patel has served on the board of Trump Media and Technology Group, which owns Truth Social, and holds a consulting contract worth at least $120,000 annually but his exact net worth isn’t known. Later, he moved to the Department of Justice (DOJ), where he served as a terrorist prosecutor, supervising the prosecution of offenders associated with ISIS and Al-Qaeda and conducting investigations.

As a congressional aide to Rep. Devin Nunes in 2018, Patel became well-known around the country. Nunes led attempts to undermine the FBI’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election while serving as the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee. Patel was instrumental in writing a confidential report accusing the FBI of abusing its monitoring powers against aides to the Trump campaign.

Patel’s professional path led him to positions on Trump’s National Security Council in 2019 and, in the last months of Trump’s presidency, as the acting defence secretary’s chief of staff.
