According to authorities, he had “multiple fraudulent IDs,” a suppressor, a ghost pistol, and a scribbled manifesto that criticized the healthcare system.
The alleged murderer of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthCare, is the brother of a renowned physician and the heir of a vacation resort fortune left by his grandparents.
The 26-year-old Luigi Mangione is from a wealthy Maryland family that was led by the late patriarch Nicholas aka Nick Mangiano, a first-generation American who established a media and real estate empire in the state.
Nick Mangione was born to an illiterate father in Baltimore’s Little Italy before the Second World War and fought in the Pacific and made his fortune as a contractor and then a real estate developer in the baby boom years.
By the 1990s, the Mangiones owned golf resorts, country clubs, a nursing home company, and three conservative talk radio stations, sometimes sparring with city and county officials as NIck Mangione expanded his business empire.
By 1995, the patriarch revealed his plans to start passing down the family enterprise to his two eldest sons, John and Louis – Luigi’s father and Nick died of a stroke in 2008 and his wife Mary died last year from complications with Parkinson’s disease.
Nick Mangione died in 2008 at the age of 83 , leaving behind 37 grandchildren, including Luigi Mangione and the family did well enough that they were able to establish a family philanthropic foundation, which donated to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and numerous other hospitals and healthcare institutions, as well as the Baltimore Opera Company and the Walters Art Museum.
Born into a low-income household in Little Italy in Baltimore, Nicholas aka Nick Mangione Sr rose from nothing. In addition, he established Lorien Health Services, a nursing home. According to his LinkedIn profile, Luigi volunteered at his grandfather’s nursing facility in 2014.
Luigi Mangione grew up in considerable comfort in this $800,000 home in Towson, Maryland where his parents still live and while his family is quite wealthy, their exact net worth isn’t known.

Nicholas was married to his wife Mary until his death, and he had ten children, including Luigi’s father Louis. Mary, Luigi’s grandmother passed away in 2013, and the pair resided in a $1.9 million mansion on their country club.
According to The Baltimore Sun, Luigi Mangione is also the cousin of Nino Mangione, a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates.
Luigi’s sister, MariaSanta Mangione, is a well-known physician, and his mother, Kathleen Zannino Mangione, runs a specialized boutique travel company specializing in the Mediterranean.
The family of Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, has released a statement following his arrest on Monday, “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news,” Delegate Nino Mangione, the suspect’s cousin, said.
