In his new role as RBI governor, Malhotra will reportedly play a key role in shaping the interim budget. Notably, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the new budget on February 1, 2025.
Sanjay Malhotra appointed as new RBI Governor
Indian IAS officer Sanjay Malhotra is the newly appointed RBI Governor, replacing the outgoing Shaktikanta Das, who served in the role for six years. Malhotra has so far played an extensive role in fiscal policymaking and tax administration and will reportedly play a vital role in shaping India’s monetary policy. He is also expected to address the country’s growing economic challenges, like inflation and growth stability.

Sanjay Malhotra is the newly appointed RBI Governor, who was born on February 14, 1968, in Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. He is currently 56 years old, and he is the 26th governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Sanjay is an Indian Administrative Service Officer of the 1990 Batch Rajasthan Cadre.
The names of his family members, parents and wife aren’t known.
Education
Sanjay Malhotra graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. He then completed a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University, USA.
Career and profession
Sanjay Malhotra has so far had an experience of over three decades in finance and taxation at the state as well as the central government level. Over the years, he has worked in various sectors like power, finance and taxation, information technology, mines, etc. Prior to his new role as Governor, he was serving as the Secretary (Revenue) in the Ministry of Finance.
Sanjay has also previously served as the ex-officio secretary to the GST Council and played a key role in tax policy formulation. He has also served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Rural Electrification Corporation, alongside serving as the additional secretary in the Ministry of Power of the Government under the Republic of India.
A governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) receives a sizable salary each month and according to a 2017 PTI article, the base pay for a governor is Rs.2.5 lakhs per month.
