Gypsy-Rose Blanchard captivated the world’s attention when she was sentenced to prison in 2016 for the murder of her abusive mother. A victim of Munchausen by proxy, Blanchard served seven years for her part in her mother’s death, before being paroled in 2023.
Now, Gypsy-Rose is finally ready to tell her story in a new book and audiobook titled, “My Time to Stand.“
Narrated by Gypsy-Rose herself, the audiobook finds the now-33-year-old recounting her earliest memories of life with her mother, including when she says things began to turn. Revealing a childhood love of Barbie dolls, cooking, and watching The People’s Court, Blanchard says her mother began controlling her interests — and soon began controlling every aspect of her life.
The book opens with a stunning admission: “When Dee Dee Blanchard was 24, she gave life to me. When I was nearly 24, I took life from her,” Gypsy writes. “I firmly believed that by doing so, I was saving the life she had guarded with all her might: mine.”
As the public now knows, Gypsy-Rose was forced to use a wheelchair while undergoing countless hospital visits and tests, all for an illness that didn’t exist. But as she shares in the audiobook, she was convinced that her mother had her best interests at heart. “No one’s ever gonna take as good care of you as me,” she recalls her mother saying.
Still, after years of abuse and social isolation, Gypsy-Rose knew she had to break the cycle. The audiobook finds Gypsy-Rose revealing new details into how she decided to kill her mother, including the incident that she says was “the final straw.” It was “the moment where I decided [if] it was her or me,” she writes, comparing the incident to someone trying to slash her throat.
The book also deals with the aftermath of the murder, including memories of Blanchard’s time in prison, how she coped with feelings of guilt, and what she discovered after finally seeing her own medical records for the first time. While a Gypsy-Rose documentary earlier this year focused more on her early life and the lead-up to the crime, the new book offers a look into Blanchard’s life today, including her at-times tumultuous love life, dealing with public scrutiny, and where she sees herself next.
Per publisher BenBella books, “After serving eight years in prison for the role she played in her mother Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy is embracing her fresh start—and reminding all of us that it’s never too late. Featuring new facts about Gypsy’s life that she previously kept private, ‘My Time to Stand’ offers an unprecedented look at the real Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, proudly embarking on her ongoing journey to recovery and self-discovery.”
