He is a founding member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and has served on its National Executive before being removed from the party. Vishwas was raised in a middle-class family, with his father, Chandra Pal Sharma, being a college lecturer and his mother, Rama Sharma, a homemaker.
After initially pursuing engineering at Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College due to his father’s wishes, he switched to studying Hindi literature and later earned a PhD. While studying for his PhD, Vishwas changed his name to Kumar Vishwas to create a poetic identity. He began his teaching career as a Hindi lecturer at Indra Gandhi PG College in Pilibanga, Rajasthan, and later taught at Lala Lajpat Rai College.

Vishwas joined AAP in 2012 as a volunteer, and he later gained fame for hosting KV Sammelan, a comedy show on Aaj Tak. Additionally, he regularly performs poetry, often addressing contemporary issues in India, and has performed globally in places like the US, UK, Singapore, and Dubai. Vishwas became involved in politics through his connection with Arvind Kejriwal, joining the India Against Corruption movement in 2005.
When the movement evolved into AAP, Vishwas was invited to join the party’s national executive. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Amethi but lost to Rahul Gandhi, securing only 25,527 votes. He has also been involved in controversies, such as allegations of illegal donations, a doctored video, and accusations of molestation, though investigations cleared him of significant wrongdoing.
Additionally, in 2017, he faced a copyright infringement claim from Amitabh Bachchan over a poem, and in 2019, he was served a legal notice for allegedly demeaning the Sikh community in a comedy program. Vishwas has appeared as a guest judge on Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs, and wrote songs for the films Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran and Veer Bhagat Singh. On a personal note, Vishwas is married to Dr Manju Sharma, and they have two daughters.
In 1994, Kumar Vishwas had gone to Rajasthan to work as a Hindi lecturer in a college where he met Manju Sharma, who was also a lecturer in the same college After working together in the same college for some years, the colleagues had soon turned into lovers and eventually got married on 24 December without telling their families due to being from different castes.
After two years of their marriage, Kumar Vishwas and his wife, Manju Sharma welcomed their first daughter Agrata Vishwas with their second daughter named Kuhu. While Manju’s net worth isn’t known, Kumar is worth Rs.5 crore.
