The Hacks actress called for studios to donate “the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters”

Hollywood’s annual awards season has been significantly impacted by the destructive fires around Los Angeles, resulting in multiple delays and cancelations. Jean Smart, who won a Golden Globe on Sunday for her work on Hacks, has now encouraged TV networks to reallocate their budgets to help with fire relief.

“Attention,” the actress wrote on Instagram last night. “With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters.”

Hacks paused the production of its new season due to the fires and Smart, who won the Globe for Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy, is a long-time Los Angeles resident. Other shows that have halted filming include Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, and Abbott Elementary.

Yesterday, the SAG Awards canceled their in-person nominations announcement, instead announcing them via a press release. The 2025 Critics Choice Awards were set for Jan. 12, but have been postponed to Jan. 26. Multiple other awards events, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Tea Party and the Writers Guild nominations, were either canceled or postponed.

Numerous fires are currently burning around Los Angeles, including the Palisades Fire on the Pacific coast and the Eaton Fire in Altadena. At least five people have been killed and nearly 2,000 structures have burned down. Several celebrities who would typically be part of the awards season rush have lost their homes.

“This is a tragic time in our history here in Los Angeles, but a time where we’re really tested,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said. “The winds were like something that I have never seen before.” He called conditions around the city “unprecedented.”
