Just when you thought you could put those face masks away, the recent wildfires in California have ignited new concerns about air quality and respiratory health.
The Los Angeles wildfires first sparked in early January and have displaced thousands of residents, who were forced to evacuate their communities. Now, those who were able to remain behind are reporting an increase in smoke, smog and debris in the air. As of this writing, the air quality index (AQI) for much of Los Angeles has hit above 100, which is labeled as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” Some areas show an AQI above 150, meaning most of the air is considered unhealthy — and potentially harmful — to the general public.
One way to protect yourself: picking up an N95 mask.
Yes, the same masks we wore for Covid are proving effective to help filter out smoke, dust and other harmful particles in the air. The FDA has approved the use of these masks as personal protective equipment (PPE), and while N95 masks were once reserved for healthcare professionals, they are now available to the public.
N95 Respirator Mask – NIOSH Approved
These N95 masks promise to block up to 95% of small particles (measured at 0.3 micron or less).
Considering that wildfire smoke particles are measured at 2.5 microns, the California Department of Public Health says this makes N95 masks super effective in wildfires.
What’s more, the company says the four-layer construction helps with neutralizing germs and viruses on the surface to prevent potentially harmful exposure into your airstream and lungs. Amazon has also begun selling N95 masks online, and the site says this 25-pack is a bestseller, with more than 5,000 kits sold in the last month.
The site says these are NIOSH-approved N95 masks that filter out at least 95% of tiny particles in the air (think smoke, fumes, odors, dust, dander and more).

Available in black, these N95 masks are Made in the USA and feature two headband straps as well as an adjustable metal nose piece to ensure a tight and comfortable seal. We’ve personally used these masks and found them to still be lightweight and breathable even with the multiple players of protection.
While regular face masks create a physical barrier against fluids, and external dust and debris, they are not designed to filter particles or prevent the spread of pathogens, such as viruses. As such, they are not approved for medical use and aren’t designated as PPE.
The FDA says N95 masks and respirators also provide a higher level of protection against viruses and bacteria, by filtering out airborne particles, while sitting more tightly against the face.
