MATSHELAPANE, PUDUMOE — Heartbreak engulfed the family of Makaota and the community of Matlhako 1 in Pudimoe after the body of 16-year-old Boingotlo Prudy Makaota was discovered buried in a shallow grave near a stream on Saturday, 11 January 2025. Boingotlo, who had a history of going missing and returning home, vanished on Wednesday, 8 January, and her disappearance tragically ended in her untimely death.
Speaking to MORONGWA, the Makaota family expressed their devastation over the loss of their beloved daughter. They revealed that Boingotlo had previously disappeared in November 2024, prompting them to open a missing person’s case. “We searched tirelessly for her, even going to Vryburg where we heard she was. She would return home but then disappear again, but we never stopped looking for her,” one family member explained with deep sorrow.
Community members shared alarming details about the events leading to Boingotlo’s death. According to witnesses, she was last seen with a man known in the area. “He usually hung out with her to smoke,” one resident alleged. On Thursday night or early Friday morning, some claim they heard screams from the suspect’s house.
The suspect, who is well-known to the community, was reportedly seen on Friday morning pushing a wheelbarrow with an unconscious Boingotlo. He allegedly tried reviving her under a running tap before taking her back to his house. Witnesses further alleged that he was later seen transporting her using the same wheelbarrow, concealing her body beneath an old couch. “He went to the stream, pretending to discard the couch, but instead dug a grave and buried her,” another resident shared.
The police were notified of the incident on Friday afternoon and responded to cordone off the scene. However, they did not immediately exhume the body. The operation only commenced on Saturday morning at around 7am and lasted five hours. Boingotlo’s remains were found wrapped in a black plastic bag and sealed with cellotape. READ MORE HERE
Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the discovery. “The body of a 16-year-old female was found buried in a shallow grave near a stream in Matshelapane, Matlhako 1, Pudumoe. A case of murder has been opened,” he said. Mokgwabone also confirmed that the suspect, whose house is located near the grave, has not yet been arrested but is known to the police.
Local traditional leader, Kgosi Shimi Tlhaganyane, weighed in on the tragic incident, urging children to respect and obey their parents. “As adults, we constantly talk to our children and call them to order, and I know that Boingotlo’s family did their best to guide her,” said Kgosi Tlhaganyane. He lamented the growing trend of children failing to heed their parents’ advice, calling it a concerning challenge in the community.
Lash Sirwe, the family spokesperson, confirmed to MORONGWA that the body was indeed that of Boingotlo. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with how the police handled the matter. “They shouldn’t have left her buried overnight and only exhumed her the next day,” he said. Sirwe also urged young girls to take extra care of themselves to avoid such tragedies and shared the family’s sorrow over Boingotlo’s involvement with drugs and her struggle to listen to her parents.
